Former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Qureshi stated that the impeachment motion moved against the current CEC is ‘more of a token because nothing is going to come out of it.’ Speaking on the announcement of election dates amid a war affecting India’s gas and crude supply, Qureshi emphasized that elections must be held on time unless Parliament declares a state of emergency. He praised the Election Commission for reducing the number of phases, noting that improved security conditions have made more paramilitary companies available. Qureshi argued for fewer phases in the social media age, saying, ‘it has become extremely important that we finish the election in one phase and get out, because what happens between the phases is sheer poison, fake news, deepfake.’ He contrasted the current two-phase election in Bengal with the previous eight-phase schedule, and congratulated the Commission for the decision.
