New Delhi: Tahawwur Rana, 26/11 mastermind, who is being extradited to India from US, will face trial in one of the most devastating terror attacks in the country.
In the Certification of Extraditability and Order of Commitment dated May 16, 2023, issued by the United States District Court for the Central District of California, the Court notes that the Government of India submitted evidence in support of its extradition request, including transcripts of David Headley’s testimony in the Northern District of Illinois (NDIL) case. The evidence submitted by the Indian government outlines, point by point, Tahawwur Rana’s role as an accomplice to David Headley in the planning of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 166 people.
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and a vital link to senior Pakistani Army officials, is being extradited from the United States to India. He is expected to arrive on Indian soil on the afternoon of April 10.
His extradition comes as the result of a coordinated effort between the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), culminating in a breakthrough after a 16-year pursuit of justice.
Rana’s extradition represents a major diplomatic achievement for India in its long-standing efforts to hold all perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai attacks accountable. Until now, Ajmal Kasab — the lone surviving attacker who was captured, tried, and executed — had been the only major figure to face justice within India for the assault that claimed over 170 lives.
