Syria News | Trump Lifts Sanctions On Syria, Announcement Sparks Wild Celebrations Across The Nation
Hundreds of Syrians took to the streets of Damascus on Tuesday evening to celebrate U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of the cessation of sanctions on their country during his visit to Riyadh.
Footage shows crowds gathering at the Damascus Sword monument in Umayyad Square, revelling in Trump’s decision while waving flags of Syria and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Residents could also be seen cheering and applauding near a large banner in the square that reads, "Thank you, Qatar."
"May God bless Mohammed bin Salman (Saudi Crown Prince); we are deeply thankful to him. God bless President Erdogan, and God bless Qatar," one of the celebrants, Nada Al-Olabi, stated. "This overwhelming happiness comes from seeing our people finally get the freedom they’ve long deserved," she added.
During his speech at the Saudi-US Investment Forum on Tuesday, Trump announced the cessation of all US sanctions on Syria, a move described as a radical shift in America’s foreign policy toward Damascus.
Trump explained this step aims to give Syria ‘a chance at greatness,’ noting the sanctions had been ‘brutal and crippling’ and had served their purpose previously, but the time had come to move beyond them.
