The Supreme Court of India has addressed its recent order on stray dogs in the Delhi NCR region, which mandates rounding up dogs and sending them to shelter homes. The order requires the establishment of at least 5000 shelter homes within eight weeks, with a directive that no dog should be ill-treated during the process. The court’s decision has divided opinion, with animal rights activists stating the order is not feasible due to a lack of infrastructure. The Supreme Court is relooking at the case and has warned against random remarks on its judgment, instructing critics to file affidavits if they wish to challenge it. Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi have presented arguments on behalf of petitioners, seeking a stay on picking up stray dogs until shelter homes are ready and sterilization is completed as per Animal Birth Control rules. The court has clarified there is no urgent stay on the order as of now, and authorities must proceed with the directives while the court continues to monitor the measures carried out by municipal authorities.
