The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to recognise the Aadhaar card as an additional document for establishing identity in the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi clarified that while Aadhaar can be accepted as the 12th document for proof of identity, it cannot be treated as proof of citizenship.
The direction came during a hearing on petitions filed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and others, who alleged that the ECI had failed to comply with the court’s earlier orders.
Mr Sibal added that the ECI had not issued clear instructions, despite previous Supreme Court rulings
Justice Joymalya Bagchi questioned the ECI’s current approach, asking, “Why does your show-cause notice refer only to the 11 documents? Our previous orders made it clear that the list is illustrative, not exhaustive.”
