Supreme Court Bans NCERT Class 8 Textbook Over Judicial Corruption References | Rajdeep Sardesai

The Supreme Court has banned the NCERT’s Class 8 Political Science textbook over a chapter containing references to judicial corruption. Chief Justice of India Suryakant called it an attempt to undermine the judiciary. A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant, Justice Joy Malabakshi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi ordered immediate removal of the chapter from all physical and digital platforms and directed authorities to seize printed copies already in circulation. The court barred any teaching from the book, imposed a blanket prohibition on its production and distribution, and issued show-cause notices to the Centre and the NCERT Chief. The controversial chapter referred to corruption at various levels of the judiciary, warned that such corruption can weaken access to justice, stated that misconduct cases have dented public confidence, flagged massive case backlogs across courts, and noted that instances of corruption within the judiciary have surfaced in the past. While NCERT has withdrawn the book and apologised, the Chief Justice observed that the statement did not contain any apology. The Union Education Minister expressed regret after the court’s observations. The ban has sparked debate on whether the judiciary is beyond criticism and if the reaction was disproportionate.
