Deadly protests led by youth, dubbed the ‘Gen Z revolution’, have erupted across Nepal, including in Kathmandu, Itahari and Pokhara. The unrest was triggered by the KP Sharma Oli government’s decision on September 4 to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, X, and WhatsApp, for not registering with authorities. Clashes between protesters and police have resulted in 20 deaths and over 100 injuries, with hospitals overwhelmed. While the government cites regulatory compliance, protesters view it as censorship. An organiser with Hami Nepali stated, "This protest is actually not for social media ban… This is more for the corruption."
