On May 14, the Sun released its most powerful solar flare in nearly two decades—an X8.7-class eruption, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. Triggered by sunspot region 3664, the flare caused temporary radio blackouts and navigation issues on Earth’s sunlit side. Although no major coronal mass ejection was detected, the flare followed days of intense solar storms and rare auroras. Scientists warn that strong solar activity can erupt at any point in Solar Cycle 25.
