A political firestorm has erupted over the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan leading the opposition. Stalin has alleged the move is a ‘conspiracy web to actually delete voters especially from the marginalized community, women as such and those who are actually going ahead and voting for the opposition.’ The DMK and its allies, along with Kerala’s ruling and opposition fronts, have protested the exercise, citing the upcoming monsoon season, logistical hurdles, and ongoing local body polls in Kerala as major concerns. They also point to the fact that the constitutional validity of a similar exercise in Bihar is still under the Supreme Court’s review. The BJP has dismissed the allegations, with leaders stating the revision is a routine process to weed out ineligible and illegal voters.
