In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment controversy, sacked teachers staged a ‘strip protest’ in Kolkata, marching half-naked towards Nabanna, the state secretariat, to demand reinstatement without reappearing for recruitment exams. The protest, termed ‘Nabanna Abhiyan,’ was organized by the ‘Jogyo Sikshak o Sikshika Adhikar Mancha’ group, representing over 25,000 educators who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court ruling that annulled the 2016 SSC appointments due to alleged irregularities.
The teachers, asserting their innocence and labeling themselves as ‘untainted,’ attempted to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi but were denied appointments. Frustrated by the lack of response, they resorted to the symbolic protest to highlight their plight. However, the demonstration met with a heavy police crackdown. Protesters were detained from multiple locations before they could commence their march, leading to confrontations and allegations of police brutality.
The Calcutta High Court had earlier directed the protesters to relocate their demonstration to Central Park in Salt Lake and limited the number of participants to 200 at a time, emphasizing the need to balance democratic protests with maintaining law and order. Despite this, the teachers continued their protest, citing the urgency of their situation and the lack of alternative employment opportunities.
The state government has indicated plans to conduct fresh recruitment exams, but the protesting teachers argue that they should not be penalized for systemic failures and corruption within the SSC. They demand immediate reinstatement and compensation for the loss of livelihood. The situation remains tense, with the education sector in West Bengal facing significant disruption due to the ongoing protests.
