Srinagar Police have registered an FIR against unknown persons for the vandalism of the National Emblem at the Dargah Hazratbal shrine. The incident, where a mob defaced the Ashoka Emblem after Friday prayers, has ignited a significant political and religious controversy. Political leaders have weighed in, with PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti defending the individuals involved, stating it is "not right to arrest those who indulge in vandalism" and "not right to call the vandals Terrorist." Separately, Omar Abdullah questioned the threatened use of the Public Safety Act against those responsible, suggesting the controversy could have been avoided. The case has been registered at the Nagin police station as investigations to identify the perpetrators begin.
