This special report discusses the volcanic ash cloud from the Hayli Gubbi volcano eruption in Ethiopia, which has travelled over 4,000 kilometres to reach Indian airspace. Environmentalist Vimlendu Jha explains the composition of the ash and why, despite concerns, it does not pose an immediate threat to the air quality in Delhi-NCR. According to Vimlendu Jha, the reason for the lack of immediate impact is the altitude difference, stating, ‘our pollution, largely when we talk about air quality or the entire, you know, the pollutants are largely in two to three kilometers from the surface. And this one is very, very high. So directly and immediately, there will not be… any implication’. The report also touches upon the potential long-term environmental consequences of the ash settling in the Himalayan region and its effect on water bodies.
