A political confrontation has erupted in Uttar Pradesh after a Samajwadi Party (SP) delegation was stopped from visiting Bareilly by the state police. The delegation, which included Members of Parliament and was led by the leader of the opposition in the UP assembly, was blocked at various locations and placed under house arrest in Lucknow, with police citing the ‘sensitive’ situation in Bareilly. Reacting to the events, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya criticised the Samajwadi Party chief, stating, "this is childish behaviour." Maurya accused the party of "dirty Muslim appeasement" and predicted that the SP’s "wipeout is certain in the upcoming 2027 state elections." The police have issued notices to the SP leaders, warning that their presence in Bareilly could cause the situation to get out of control.
