Launched in 1972 by the Soviet Union, Kosmos 482 was meant for Venus but got stuck in Earth’s orbit due to a timer malfunction. Now, after 53 years in space, the 495-kg spacecraft is expected to make an uncontrolled reentry between May 8 and 11, 2025. Experts say it could survive reentry due to its Venus-grade durability and might fall anywhere between 52°N and 52°S latitude. Though most likely to crash into an ocean, there’s a slim chance it could reenter over land, potentially appearing like a fireball in the sky.
