South Korea is reeling from one of its deadliest aviation disasters in decades. A Jeju Air passenger plane, carrying 181 people, burst into flames after skidding off the runway and crashing into a concrete fence at Muan Airport on Sunday, December 29, 2024. Tragically, 179 lives were lost in the crash, which occurred when the plane’s front landing gear apparently failed to deploy during landing.
Emergency workers, including 32 fire trucks and several helicopters, managed to extinguish the flames and rescued two survivors—a passenger and a crew member. The aircraft was identified as a 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 jet arriving from Bangkok.
In response, South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok has ordered a comprehensive safety inspection of the country’s airline operations once recovery efforts are completed. The Transport Ministry also announced an urgent safety review of all Boeing 737-800 planes operated by South Korean airlines.
