The Centre has revoked the National Security Act detention order against climate activist Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect. Wangchuk, who was detained since September 26, 2024, following violent protests in Leh that claimed four lives, has spent over 165 days in Jodhpur Central Jail. The Home Ministry stated in its order that Wangchuk was detained to maintain public order. The government reiterated that it is ready for constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders and expressed hope that issues concerning the region will be resolved through talks. Wangchuk’s release is expected to unlock stalled discussions on Ladakh, with hopes of a peaceful solution in the Union Territory emerging once again.
