Australia plans to set a lower age limit of 14-16 years, the specifics of the lower limit have not been made clear just yet.. The move was prompted by a parliamentary inquiry into the social media effect on society.. If this proposal does done into a law, Australia would be the first nation to bring an age limit, despite the fact that 75% of Australian teens are on social media..
The UK too has taken note of the ill effects of social media by holding social media companied legally responsible for keeping children safe online.. These conversations around age limit become particularly interesting given Meta reduced the age limit from 16 to 13 just last year.
But while the allowed age limit is 13, the truth is in the absence of age verification, absence of punitive action, no supervision and no age-wise categorization of content age on social media is a number that means nothing .. digital rights activists have raised red flags with the idea of a blanket ban saying it could direct traffic to unregulated alternatives and questioned whether banning social media for teens would now be able to fix underlying issues..
