A stampede at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) event in Karur, Tamil Nadu, resulted in 41 fatalities. The incident, occurring during a political rally for actor Vijay’s party, has led to a political blame game. Conflicting claims have emerged regarding a power cut; TVK initially attributed the chaos to it, but a letter accessed by India Today indicated the party had requested a power shutdown for safety. An FIR has been registered against senior TVK functionaries, though not actor Vijay, with a four-hour delay in his arrival cited among contributing factors. TVK has demanded a CBI or SIT probe into the event. The state government has appointed a one-man commission, headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadisan, to investigate. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Karur to meet the bereaved families. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced an ex-gratia of ₹10,00,000 for victims’ families and issued a warning against spreading misinformation. Congress MP Karthi Chidambaram commented on the recurring nature of such incidents.
