At the TATA Hackathon AI Summit, Smriti Irani, Chairperson of the Alliance for Global Good, Gender Equity & Equality, lauded the Tata Group for its ‘Tata AI Sakhi’ initiative, which trains women from rural India in artificial intelligence. Irani highlighted that the program breaks technological barriers for women over 35, particularly those from states like Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha. She noted that while 99% of women have access to smartphones, only 56% own them, emphasizing that ‘if you enhance the access to ownership of digital device, you will see a larger spread in terms of use of AI’. Irani also addressed the risks of deep fakes and fake news, recalling her early warnings as the former I&B Minister in 2017. She called for a focus on intellectual property protection and compliance within the creative economy. The discussion underscored the potential for AI to provide economic opportunities for India’s 2.72 crore digitally literate women while ensuring technology remains in sync with the nation’s labor capital.
