Harvinder Singh created history as he won India’s first ever gold medal in archery at the Paralympics 2024. Sheetal Devi became a worldwide sensation at the Paris Paralympics 2024 when she hit a bulls eye despite not having arms. And now in an exclusive chat with the Republic Sport Fit podcast, they delve deep into their secrets to success and what put them in a position to make history for India.
Harvinder Singh was also part of the Indian contingent in Tokyo 2020 but missed out on a medal, at the Para games in Paris 2024, Harvinder turned his fortunes around enroute to a golden triumph.
Being the youngest in the Indian contingent, Sheetal Devi had an uphill task managing her nerves at the Paris Games as she bagged a bronze medal in mixed team archery alongside teammate Rakesh Kumar.
They go into detail about a number of things, with Harvinder pointing out how fan presence in Paris helped him secure Gold medal compared to Tokyo where the stadiums were empty due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also talks about how his father transforming his own farm into a practice area for him ensured he got valuable practice time during the start of the worldwide pandemic and the subsequent lockdown that followed.
Sheetal talks about how Indian team helped her calm her nerves during the Paris Paralympics campaign which ended up helping her eventually reach the podium in the mixed team event.
She also delves deep into what motivated her to take up the sport of archery, including talking about how she found it difficult to even hold up the bow at first as she found it so heavy.
They also talk about balancing sports and studies – Sheetal is still a school student and Harvinder is in the process of completing his PhD in the field of economics, something he hopes to achieve by the end of this year.
