The Supreme Court resumed hearing the bail plea of Sharjeel Imam, an accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case, where the Delhi Police presented strong arguments against him. Appearing for the Delhi Police, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju contended that Imam and his associates were involved in a conspiracy for regime change, not just protests against the CAA. According to the Delhi Police, ‘educated individuals can be far more dangerous than ground-level terrorists’. The police alleged that Imam used his state-funded education for nefarious activities and provoked Muslims through his speeches. A key piece of evidence highlighted was a speech referencing the ‘chicken’s neck’ or Siliguri corridor, allegedly as part of a plan to cut off Assam and the North-East from the rest of India. The Delhi High Court had previously denied bail to several accused in the matter, which the Supreme Court will continue to hear.
