Opposition MPs strongly criticised the government in the Rajya Sabha for allowing private companies into the nuclear power sector while debating the SHANTI Bill, 2025. They said this could affect national security, public safety, and India’s sovereignty.
Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose said the Bill is “dangerous” and benefits private profit instead of public interest. She warned that it ends decades of government control over nuclear power and could protect private companies from liability in case of accidents.
DMK MP P. Wilson called the Bill a threat to peace and security, saying it removes government control from one of the most sensitive sectors. He opposed opening the entire nuclear fuel cycle to private players.
AAP MP Sandeep Pathak questioned why India should focus on nuclear energy instead of renewable energy, calling nuclear power expensive and risky. He also questioned the government’s change in stand on private and foreign involvement.
