The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the rising menace of ‘digital arrest’ scams targeting citizens, particularly the elderly. The court’s action was prompted by a complaint from a senior citizen couple in Ambala who were defrauded of their life savings. The apex court stated that ‘forging court orders signatures of judges to digitally arrest innocent people strikes a trust and faith of people in judicial institutions.’ Scammers, posing as CBI, tax, and judicial officials, used forged court orders and seals to extort over a crore of rupees from the victims. Taking serious note of this being a direct assault on the judicial system, the court has issued notices to the Home Ministry, the CBI, and the Haryana government, seeking a status report and coordinated pan-India action to tackle this organised criminal activity. The court has also requested the assistance of the Attorney General in the matter.
