Scientists from Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania, have developed an innovative method to produce triacetin, a biodiesel additive, using cigarette butts. Through pyrolysis at high temperatures, they extracted 43% triacetin, reducing the environmental hazards associated with conventional production. This process also yields other useful by-products like char for fertilizers and wastewater treatment, and gas for energy. Utilizing cigarette butts, which are abundant and easy to collect, could significantly lower biodiesel costs while promoting sustainable waste management and eco-friendly energy solutions.
