Scientists have traced the origin of the modern potato to a surprising source — the tomato. Around 8–9 million years ago, wild tomatoes from the Andes interbred with a wild potato species called Etuberosum from central Chile, creating a new hybrid lineage known as Petota. This genetic mix introduced the ability to grow starchy tubers, making potatoes more resilient and able to store water and nutrients. The study reveals how hybridisation between species can spark the evolution of entirely new traits, giving rise to one of the world’s most important food crops.
