The Supreme Court imposed a sweeping ban on an NCERT Class 8 textbook containing a chapter on judicial corruption, calling it a deep-rooted conspiracy to malign the institution. A three-judge bench led by the Chief Justice of India ordered immediate removal of the chapter from all physical and digital platforms, directed seizure of printed copies, and barred any teaching from the textbook. The court also issued a show-cause notice to the Centre and NCERT Chief. The controversial chapter discussed corruption at various levels of the judiciary, noting that misconduct cases have dented public confidence and flagged massive case backlogs. Former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi termed it criminal contempt of the grossest nature, stating it was a calculated attempt to denigrate the judiciary. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Deepak Gupta supported the court’s action, arguing the chapter painted the judiciary entirely in dark shades without balance. Sources revealed that the Prime Minister recently objected to the inclusion of the corruption case involving the judiciary in a cabinet meeting.
