The Supreme Court on Thursday banned NCERT’s latest political science textbook for Class VIII, describing one chapter as a calculated attempt to erode the credibility of the judiciary. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Suryakant ordered immediate removal of the chapter from all platforms, ceased printed copies in circulation, and barred teaching from the book. The controversial chapter referred to corruption at various levels of the judiciary, warned it could weaken access to justice, and noted that misconduct cases have dented public confidence. After the ruling, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed regret, calling the situation worrying and accepting responsibility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed anguish during a cabinet meeting, questioning who oversees NCERT textbook content and seeking accountability. NCERT has withdrawn the textbook and called back 38 books still in circulation.
