A major cultural flashpoint is unfolding as Satyajit Ray’s ancestral home in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, is being demolished, sparking outrage. The property, originally belonging to Ray’s grandfather and Bengal-Renaissance figure Upendra Kishore Ray Choudhury, had been abandoned since 2014. This follows the vandalizing of Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home a month prior. India has officially expressed profound regret and offered technical and financial assistance to Bangladesh to reconstruct the site as a museum or heritage centre. However, Bangladeshi authorities cite safety concerns for the demolition, intending to build a new concrete structure. Heritage activists have condemned the move. Satyajit Ray’s son, Sandip Ray, expressed his sadness, stating, "A few years ago, I heard that the house was going to be restored… But now I have heard that it will be demolished. I have nothing to say. It’s very sad that this has happened."
