The political conflict between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi intensifies as the state government announces a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into Gogoi’s wife, a UK national. Sarma has alleged she has links to Pakistan’s ISI and is on their payroll, a claim Gogoi has dismissed as baseless. An SIT is already investigating the matter. Responding to the allegations on India Today, Gogoi said, "Either I’m the most brilliant agent or we have the one of the most, you know, non-performing intelligence agencies." He stated his wife, a climate change professional, worked on a South Asia program that included Pakistan from 2011-2012. The charges and the probe come in the run-up to the assembly elections in Assam.
