S Gurumurthy On How World Is Witnessing Emergence Of Civilisational Nationalism | IES 2025
At the India Economic Summit 2025, Thuglak editor S. Gurumurthy spoke about how the idea of “modernity” has changed around the world. He said that for many years, the world believed that modernity meant only what the West followed, because Western modernity came from the Enlightenment period. But this view is no longer accepted. He referred to historian Sebastian Conrad, who wrote in 2007 that every civilisation modernises in its own way. For example, Japan became modern through strong industry, and China through its renewed Confucian culture. Gurumurthy said India will also modernise in its own civilisational way.
He explained that Indian media, academics and political groups do not talk about this idea, but India is still modernising on its own path. He said the world today is not just multipolar; it is also “multi-modern”, with different forms of modernity growing in the last 25 to 30 years.
Gurumurthy described how, after World War II, global development models pushed underdeveloped countries to reject their traditions and adopt Western ways. He said China destroyed much of its past during the Cultural Revolution, and Russia did the same under communism. But today, both China and Russia have returned to their civilisational roots. He said this new trend of “civilisational nationalism” is rising in many countries, including India.
