Clashes between pro-Palestinian university students & riot police outside Egypt’s embassy in Beirut. Holding Palestinian flags, dozens of university students gathered outside the embassy. They called Egyptian govt to open the Rafah border crossing & allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. Pertinent to note, Rafah, the southernmost Gaza city, is on the border with Egypt. Egypt -Won’t open Rafah crossing until control of the Gaza side is handed back to the Palestinians. Egypt agreed to temporarily divert traffic through Kerem Shalom, Gaza’s main cargo terminal. The Kerem Shalom decision came after a call between Biden & Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Protests by students & other groups denouncing the Israel-Hamas war have been recurrent In Lebanon. This is the second time in under a week that students in Beirut marched to the Egyptian Embassy. UN – Entry of food and other supplies has plunged dramatically since Israel’s Rafah offensive. The war began when Hamas attacked Israel, killing around 1,200 & taking about 250 hostages. Gaza armed groups still hold about 100 hostages and the remains of around 30 others. Gaza officials say the Palestinian death toll in the war is now above 36,000. Severe hunger is widespread and U.N. officials say parts Gaza are experiencing famine.
