RG Kar Case: Justice For Abhaya Protest Against Mamata Banerjee At Swasthya Bhawan Continues

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached the protest side in front of state health department headquarters in Salt Lake in Kolkata on Saturday amid growing outrage and protest by doctors after rape and murder of 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

At the protest site, CM Mamata Banerjee addressed and interacted with the agitating junior doctors and urged them to return to work.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s Government is coming under global scrutiny in the aftermath of 31 year old Abhaya’s Rape and Murder in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital and College. Protests which started as a demand for safety of young doctors and trainee medical professionals in Kolkata have erupted into a global clarion call for #justiceforabhaya.

Mamata Banerjee’s TMC Government in West Bengal’s inaction and the Kolkata Police’s specific lack of intent to secure the crime screen in the aftermath of the Rape and Murder have sent shockwaves across the world. Mamata Banerjee, who is not only the Chief Minister, but also the Home Minister and the Health Minister of West Bengal’s own decisions are coming under intense public scrutiny with several citizens calling for her resignation on moral grounds.

The Supreme Court of India also took suo motu cognizance of the RG Kar Rape and Horror Case, with CJI DY Chandrachud coming down heavily on Mamata Banerjee’s administration. Mamata Banerjee was represented by Kapil Sibal in Supreme Court.

Raising serious questions on the ability of Mamata Banerjee’s Police to give protection to the people, the Supreme Court stated, "Is this police going to protect them", while noting that women doctors have left the Hospital as they feared for their security". CJI Chandrachud noted in oral observations and in the order of the Honourable top court that, "we are unable to comprehend how the state was not able to handle the issue of vandalism at the hospital".

The Supreme Court also spoke against Mamata Banerjee’s administration cracking down on peaceful protesters. Amid reports of Notices being sent to protesters, outspoken doctors and justice seekers from civil society, the Supreme Court said, "Let not the power of the state of West Bengal be unleashed on peaceful protesters"- a statement the top court repeated 5 times.
