Renuka Chowdhury, Rajya Sabha MP and Congress senior leader, spoke against the transgender bill that cleared the Lok Sabha. She clarified that the Congress is not against transgender rights but opposes this bill because it ‘strips them of any vestige of respect and privacy’. Chowdhury questioned the competence of medical boards in India and whether district magistrates can handle such sensitive cases. She criticized the requirement for transgenders to report and prove their identity, saying ‘if they’re not satisfied, then they can turn everything down and turn it against the gender people’. She argued that transgenders are citizens who deserve respect and the right to self-identify. Chaudhary also questioned the government’s priorities, pointing out that the percentage of transgender population is minimal and the bill should go to a standing committee for proper review. She stated, ‘You cannot take away the rights of the transgenders’.
