Two massive deals on the IPL pitch have reshaped the league’s ownership landscape. United Spirits has sold its entire 100 percent stake in Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a consortium comprising Aditya Birla Group, Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures and Blackstone. The deal is valued at 1.78 billion dollars or 16,660 crore rupees. Aditya Birla Group director Aryaman Vikram Birla will serve as chairman of the franchise. In another deal, Rajasthan Royals has been sold to a Kal Somani-led consortium for 1.63 billion dollars. The transactions indicate that Indian cricket is now well and truly global, making it an expensive market. From Diageo’s perspective, which paid about 110 million dollars in 2007 to buy the team, the selling price represents a significant return. The IPL team had a revenue of about 500 crores for FY25. These deals come just three days before the next round of the IPL and follow Gujarat Titans’ acquisition by Torrent Group last December for about a billion dollars for a 76 percent stake.
