In a significant interview at the India Today Conclave, Ravindran Shankaran, Director General of the Bihar Sports Authority, detailed a major transformation in the state’s sports sector. A key revelation was the massive budget increase for the Bihar State Sports Authority from ₹30 crore in 2021 to ₹800 crore. Shankaran outlined the ‘Medal Lao, Naukri Pao’ scheme, which provides government jobs to medal-winning athletes, as a cornerstone of this revolution. He also announced a target of sending at least four athletes from Bihar to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The strategy involves creating a robust institutional framework to ensure the ‘krira kranti’ (sports revolution) is not dependent on individuals or political changes. This includes bringing back experienced Bihari coaches like Dronacharya Awardee Harindra Singh to mentor talent at the grassroots level and developing high-performance centres.
