At the India Today Conclave, Professor Ramesh Raskar, Associate Professor at the MIT Media Lab, proposed a revolutionary vision for India’s digital future: a personal AI agent for every citizen. He explained that while the current ‘factory phase’ of AI is dominated by tech giants, India is uniquely positioned to lead the ‘bazaar phase’ through decentralisation. Raskar stated, ‘What if every citizen has an AI agent for themselves?’ highlighting how this could empower individuals like rural pilgrims at the Kumbh Mela to navigate services seamlessly. He introduced ‘Doot’, a personal AI messenger built on the NANDA (Networked AI Agents in Decentralized Architecture) framework. This system leverages India’s existing Digital Public Infrastructure, including Aadhaar and UPI, to create a democratic ecosystem where agents interact for commerce, health, and justice. Raskar argued that this shift will move society from being ‘intelligent slaves’ of centralized models to active participants in a creator economy, ultimately making daily life more human-centric by automating routine tasks.
