In an exclusive conversation with India Today, India’s first, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla shared their unique perspectives on environmental sustainability from space. Rakesh Sharma highlighted the visible fragility of Earth, noting that pollution is clearly visible from orbit and ‘is no respecter of national boundaries.’ He emphasized that the root cause of global conflict is the ‘inequitable distribution of resources.’ Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently spent 20 days on the International Space Station, described the rigorous sustainability required in space, famously remarking that ‘yesterday’s coffee is also tomorrow’s coffee’ due to 98% water recycling. Both air warriors urged the younger generation to adopt sustainable habits, stressing that Earth is our only home and its resources are finite. They also discussed the collaborative nature of space missions, with Shukla sharing how he offered Indian sweets like ‘gajar ka halwa’ to international crew members to bridge cultural boundaries.
