Congress MP Sonia Gandhi spoke in the Rajya Sabha and urged the government to improve salaries and staffing for ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and community resource persons.
She said these women play a very important role in delivering health, nutrition, and welfare services, but they are overworked and underpaid. Due to staff shortages, many children and mothers are missing essential services. She pointed out that vacancies remain unfilled and existing posts are inadequate because population data has not been updated since the 2011 Census.
Sonia Gandhi asked the government to fill all vacancies, ensure timely payment, double the Centre’s contribution to wages, appoint one more ASHA worker in villages with over 2,500 people, and increase the number of Anganwadi workers so they can also support early childhood education.
