During the Lok Sabha discussion on the 150th anniversary of the national song “Vande Mataram,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the song has not received the respect it truly deserves.
He explained that although India had once discussed giving equal status to both the national anthem Jana Gana Mana and the national song Vande Mataram, only the national anthem became widely accepted and recognised.
Rajnath Singh said that Vande Mataram was pushed to the side and treated unfairly over the years—even though it played a major role in India’s freedom struggle.
He added that everyone should know the history of the “injustice” done to the song and that it deserves more honour in modern India.
