A political firestorm has erupted following a shirtless protest by Indian Youth Congress (IYC) workers at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi, leading to a sharp escalation in tensions between the Congress party and the BJP-led government. Several IYC workers were arrested under non-bailable sections after demonstrating at Bharat Mandapam, with police securing five-day custody. The police action was labeled an ‘excessive use of law’ by legal experts. In a counter-attack, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having ‘sleepless nights’ over the Adani investigation in the US and called a recent Indo-US trade deal a ‘shameful sell-out’. This followed the Prime Minister’s description of the protest as a ‘bankruptcy of the Congress party’. BJP spokesperson Zafar Islam defended the state’s response, calling the protest a ‘shameful act’ and ‘a sort of sedition’.
