The ten-day blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted critical energy routes, as 20-25% of global oil and gas passes through this corridor. India faces significant exposure, relying on the strait for 50% of crude oil imports, 85% of LPG, and 55% of LNG shipments. Major supply shocks have hit Bengaluru and Chennai, where hotel associations warn of potential closures within 48 to 72 hours due to fuel shortages. While the government prioritizes household LPG supplies, the waiting period for cylinders has increased to 25 days. Economists warn that sustained price hikes could impact the Indian economy by $2.5 billion per dollar increase. In Parliament, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar advocated for diplomacy, while opposition leaders questioned the government’s response. Meanwhile, Iran has named Mojtaba Khamenei as its new Supreme Leader amid ongoing regional instability.
