NATO allies have declined US President Donald Trump’s request to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz. NATO Secretary General stated that operations in the waterway are not a NATO mission. This occurs as India manages an energy crisis caused by a blockade, impacting 60 percent of its LNG and LPG imports. While Indian tankers Shivalik and Nanda Devi navigated the strait following diplomatic engagement with Iran, 22 Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded. Experts from Goldman Sachs and the Hudson Institute identify this as a terms of trade shock, noting that every million barrels removed from supply adds four dollars to crude oil prices. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar credited diplomacy for the passage of specific vessels, though 37 additional tankers carrying oil and LPG are currently in open waters. Analysts suggest that eliminating Iranian drone and missile launchers may require ground troops, indicating a prolonged conflict. The duration of the West Asia crisis remains a factor for India’s industrial production and current account deficit.
