A United States submarine has sunk the Iranian warship IRIS Dena within Sri Lanka’s exclusive economic zone, resulting in at least 80 fatalities. The vessel was returning from naval exercises in India, including the International Fleet Review in Vishakhapatnam. As the Sri Lankan Navy conducts rescue operations 40 miles from its coast, opposition leader Namal Rajapaksa has demanded clarity regarding the government’s prior knowledge of the operation. Admiral Arun Prakash characterized the incident as occurring at India’s doorstep. This escalation marks the sixth day of the Iran conflict, causing oil prices to surge and global markets to decline. Professor Bernard Haykel of Princeton University states Iran is targeting energy markets to create regional chaos. Concurrently, Professor Steve Hanke of Johns Hopkins University reports the United States spent approximately 1.43 billion dollars within 72 hours. Hanke notes that 61 percent of U.S. regime change attempts since World War II have failed and highlights the influence of the Israel lobby on American foreign policy.
