In an exclusive conversation with India Today At AI Summit, Amitabh Kant, former CEO of Niti Aayog, discussed India’s trajectory in the global artificial intelligence race. Addressing initial criticisms of the summit’s management, Kant highlighted the overwhelming energy of India’s youth. He argued that the state must act only as a facilitator, providing computing power and data sets, while leaving disruption to startups. Kant stated, "An AI revolution can only be fueled by cutting-edge entrepreneurs, not by ministers or not by civil servants like me." He contrasted the Indian model of digital public infrastructure with the American model, which he claimed creates a digital divide. Kant expressed confidence that India’s renewable energy capacity and vast data sets position it to lead in sustainable AI. He dismissed concerns about being a late mover, noting that historical tech battles were won by those who perfected the technology rather than those who started first. He concluded by advocating for AI education starting from primary school to prepare for shifting job markets.
