Rahul Gandhi Slams India-US Deal: 'Indian Data Is Our Biggest Asset, Not For Free Flow To US'

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Union Budget and the ‘Mrs.5’ trade deal with the United States during a session in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi argued that the government has compromised India’s ‘most valuable asset’—its data—by allowing free data flow to the US and giving up control over digital trade rules. He stated, ‘If the Americans want to remain a superpower and if the Americans want to protect their dollar, the key to that is Indian data.’ Gandhi further criticised the impact of the deal on the textile industry, noting that while Bangladesh enjoys zero tariffs, Indian tariffs have surged to 18%, effectively ‘killing’ local manufacturers. He also raised concerns over energy security, claiming the US would now dictate India’s oil procurement from nations like Russia and Iran. Additionally, he warned that opening doors to mechanized American farms would ‘crush’ poor Indian farmers, calling the move ‘disgraceful’ for the country’s agricultural sovereignty.
