Delhi Police arrested Youth Congress chief Uday Banuchib over a shirtless protest at the AI summit, making him the eighth person arrested in the case. He has been sent to four days police custody with the investigation now handled by the crime branch. Police have booked him on charges of criminal conspiracy, voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, obstructing a public servant on duty, and wilful disobedience, with non-bailable sections applied in a case that usually attracts bailable charges. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi backed Youth Congress workers in two addresses within 24 hours, stating ‘We protect the country. We protect the farmers. We protect the workers. We protect the small and medium industries. And we protect the country’s data. We are fighting for the constitution. Congress party workers, don’t be afraid. Don’t take a step back.’ Gandhi also demanded that the India-US trade deal be scrapped and criticised the Prime Minister over mentions in the Epstein files. The protest has sparked debate over whether dissent is being criminalised.
