Punjab Floods Latest News LIVE | Why does Punjab get flooded almost every year?
Ironically, it’s the rivers that make Punjab fertile, the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi is also the reason why Punjab gets flooded. These rivers, rich with silt, sand, and clay, have historically made Punjab one of the most fertile lands on Earth. But when torrential rain lashes not just Punjab, but upstream regions of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, these rivers swell and often cross the danger mark. This year, rainfall in these regions was above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Punjab’s first line of defence the Dhussi Bandhs, or earthen embankments were overwhelmed.
And according to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, illegal mining has weakened these protective embankments, making them vulnerable when the rivers rage. – Bite for this statement.
