Puneet Chandok On AI Sovereignty, Skilling 20 Million Indians And Global Innovation

At the India Today AI Summit, Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, discussed the roadmap for a self-reliant or ‘Atmanirbhar’ AI for India. He emphasized that AI should be viewed as a ‘cognitive amplifier’ rather than a tool for enslavement, noting that Microsoft is investing $17.5 billion in Indian infrastructure. Chandok highlighted the importance of ‘diffusion’ and ‘skilling’, announcing Microsoft’s commitment to skill 20 million Indians by 2030. Addressing concerns about job losses, he stated, ‘People will not lose jobs to AI, people will lose jobs to people who know AI.’ He further explained that India’s competitive advantage lies in its 22 million developers and robust digital public infrastructure. Chandok urged a shift from ‘clinging to job descriptions’ to embracing AI as a digital teammate, suggesting that English is becoming the new coding language. He advocated for a ‘five-layered cake’ approach to AI sovereignty, balancing domestic builds with global frontier technology.
