Proxy forces armed by Iran could take part in retaliation against Israel over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged near-daily strikes for the past 10 months during the war in Gaza. However, last week’s assassinations of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran’s capital and Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Beirut have sent regional tensions soaring. Since then, the US has braced for retaliatory strikes against Israel. Dr. Matthew Levitt from The Washington Institute on Near East Policy said that retaliation is certain.
