Proud To Be Indian: Meet The Leprosy Welfare Pioneer Suresh Harilal Soni
Suresh Harilal Soni, the humble founder of Sahyog Kushtha Yagna Trust in Gujarat, shares his transformative journey from a top mathematics graduate at M.S. University, Vadodara, to a lifelong crusader for leprosy patients, intellectually disabled individuals, and the underprivileged. Leaving a secure teaching job in 1978, he built a self-reliant 30-acre village called Sahyog near Shamaliya, complete with a hospital, school, physiotherapy center, grocery shop, and vocational training—now home to over 1,000 residents living with dignity.
Joined by his devoted wife Indira and their children, Dipak and Parul, Soni—always in simple khadi kurta and half-pant—continues 50+ years of service, including health camps for HIV, TB, and surgeries, earning him the Padma Shri in 2025 for social work. Known as "Sabarkantha no Sahyojak," his story proves one family’s compassion can erase stigma and rebuild lives, embodying India’s spirit of selfless sewa.
